Kill the concept of "RT does not equal endorsement."
Don't share content if you don't endorse it.
Don't spread it. Let it die.
Do not give it a platform.
@garrett I think it's also a counter for people not wanting their employers to judge them on their content
@jalcine I do agree that is a 100% valid concern. But, I do not believe employers are that naive anymore.
@garrett I think it makes sense to link to something crazy, but not retweet it without a comment.
If I just retweeted the racist bullshit my current government is into, It would lack the additional '... and here is why this is fucking nonsense'; sometimes it is necessary to bring it to people's attention, when they are up to no good.
@garrett That thought completely.
@garrett they only say that as a defense because they agree with it
@garrett spot on!
@garrett pure truth. Everything I tweet I endorse 🤷🏿♂️✊🏾
@garrett well then, better not share this
@kelly_clowers That’s the spirit!
@garrett I dn't know, sometimes I boost content I don't fully agree with because I think it may be important. For example, sometimes I boost posts about racism written by black people even if don't entirely agree with their analysis because I think it's important for those voices to be heard.
@Sylvhem That’s fine you are free to disagree :)
@lanodan That is up to you and how you feel about it.
@garrett I disagree.
@USBloveDog Well, how can I argue with a USBloveDog?
@garrett RT can also mean pointing out lies, etc. If people can't use their brain to understand what is wrong and what is right, then someone will get them somehow...
@garrett If I can't link the original lie, how can I point out the source of lie?
@EdwardTorvalds Happy to help!
What about refuting it with quality rhetoric in a well contextualized refutation focused on solution finding with a sufficient balance of logos and pathos?
At least in an academic it salon type setting?
@garrett that sounds like you want to encourage filter bubbles. Brexit and Trump is what you get out of that approach.
We need to talk more with people across the spectrum, not less, unless we want extremism in either side to grow.
@garrett jepp. Increasing the amount of work to appease those who don't understand the difference between endorsement an RTs still discourages communication and has the same effect overall.
The is not a solution, just a problem that has been dressed up to appear slightly less menacing.
@Matemann It's not about "those who don't understand the difference between endorsement an RTs" it's about not giving content you wouldn't support the inherent benefits they receive from you whether you want them to or not.
I'm not really interested in debate. You're free to disagree.
@garrett I think your unwillingness to debate (and change viewpoints, yours, mine or those of others in the process) has been made abundantly clear. I will consider you to be someone who wants to encourage extremism then.
Have a nice day.
@Matemann You too!
@garrett generally, yes. but when the toot sums up an argument you see gaining stream but strongly disagree with, I'd love to be able to 'RT with comment' it and explain why it's BS. eventually have that spread farther and get more love than the original BS, while it also maintains the possibility for dialogue.
I am boosting this but don't endorse that view because I like to troll lightly
@TurdFerguson Interesting tactic. Let's see if it pays off!
Stop the outrage machine
I've already made the conscious decision to use Mastodon differently than Twitter.
I want to focus on what makes me happy and share that with like minded people.
I couldn't give a damn about my follower count. I'm already blessed to interact with good people.
I'm not interested in follow backs or being mandatory mutuals. If I follow you, and you don't follow me... that's cool and vice versa too.
Spread happiness. Spread love.
